Constant White-Water?
Are you experiencing a constant white-water ride?![]()
You seem to be in a constant state of buffeting by unexpected events, hanging on tight as best you can to just go with the flow and unsure what’s around the next corner. There never seems to be any quiet water, even just an eddy you can circle out into for some respite. Clearly, in acutely uncertain and turbulent times, we all experience white-water to some degree, when all we can do is hang on tight and go with the flow, putting an oar back in the water as and when we can. That’s one way to travel, but its stressful, frustrating and painful, not least of all finacially.
Wave after wave of dynamic complexity (The Traffic of Dynamic Complexity) has washed over us over recent times with the increasing speed of business, pace of change and volatility. If we have not raised our game, then dynanic complexity is on top of us, leaving us swamped and in a constant state of white-water. We might think there isn’t much we can do about it, and its simply how things are these days, but that would be the wrong kind of simplicity (Simplicity & Complexity). We must move through complexity to master the elegant simplicity on the other side, getting back on top of things - so we are on top of dynamic complexity, dynamic complexity is not on top of us. We are driving it, its not driving us, as it will drive us crazy, up the wall, around the bend!
The challenge is to get back up on terra-firma, dry land, getting back In the Driving Seat. If our executives are not tackling this, constant white-water will be the mother-of-all-excuses for not doing what they said they would do and meeting their commitments (Q5: What’s your best practice for getting an executive team to fully execute what it commits to?).
